TRICHY: Sri Lankan navy arrested 12 Tamil Nadu fishermen and seized their trawler on charges of poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters off Paruthithurai (Point Pedro) in Jaffna district on Sunday.
The fishermen, who had set out to sea from Akkaraipettai in Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam district early on Saturday, were taken to Sri Lanka's Kankesanthurai harbour and handed over to Mailadi fisheries inspector for legal proceedings, Coastal Security Group said.
So far in 2024, Lankan navy has seized 62 Indian fishing boats and arrested 462 fishermen. This includes 16 fishermen from Rameswaram arrested four days ago.
