NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday took suo motu cognizance of the alleged remarks made by Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda of the Karnataka high court towards a female advocate during court proceedings. The incident came to light through media reports that drew attention to the judge's comments.
In response, a five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and comprising senior judges, convened to address the matter. The bench has asked the Karnataka high court to provide a report on the judge's comments after consulting with the Chief Justice of the high court.
"Attention has been drawn to media reports to the comments made by Justice...of Karnataka High Court during the court proceedings. We request the Karnataka high court to submit report after seeking instructions from the Chief Justice of the high court," the CJI said.
"We may lay down some basic guidelines," the bench, which also comprised Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant and Hrishikesh Roy, said.
The report is to be submitted to the secretary general of the Supreme Court within the next two days, and the plea is scheduled for hearing on Wednesday.
The incident came to light when senior advocate Indira Jaising took to 'X' (formerly Twitter) to urge the Chief Justice of India to take suo motu judicial note of the judge's comments, which were captured in a viral video of the court proceedings on Thursday.
