NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday issued a stern warning to Pakistan in his first public address since Operation Sindoor , asserting that India has only "paused" military action and will retaliate on its own terms if another terror attack occurs.
“We will be monitoring every step of Pakistan,” PM Modi said, ruling out any dialogue unless it pertains to terrorism or the return of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. “Terror and talks can’t go together. Nor can terror and trade,” he added.
The PM cautioned that Pakistan’s support for terrorism will lead to its downfall, declaring that peace cannot be achieved unless the terror infrastructure is dismantled. “The way the Pakistani army and the Pakistan government are encouraging terrorism, it will destroy Pakistan one day,” he said. “If Pakistan wants to survive, it will have to destroy its terror infrastructure. There is no other way to peace.”
Operation Sindoor: India's response
India launched Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that killed 26 people. In retaliation, precision strikes were carried out on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK), killing over 100 terrorists. Forces also pounded Pakistani air bases after Islamabad responded with aggression.
India had previously conducted surgical strikes in 2016 and aerial strikes in Balakot in 2019 following terror attacks.
Ceasefire talks and violations
On Saturday, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) reached out to his Indian counterpart, Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, to propose a cessation of hostilities. Firing and air intrusions were halted from 5 pm on May 10, following a 3:35 pm call between the DGMOs.
Lt Gen Ghai, at a Sunday press conference, confirmed the temporary ceasefire agreement but said Pakistan violated it within hours with cross-border firing and drone intrusions.
“These violations were responded to robustly,” he said. “Pakistan was informed of the breaches via hotline, and we made it clear that any repeat will be met fiercely.”
The two DGMOs held further talks on Monday, but India's stance remains firm, restraint is not weakness, and any future provocation will be met with force.
