Kolkata gang rape case: Court sends 4 accused to 14-day judicial custody; SFI holds protest at Howrah college

NEW DELHI: Alipore Court granted 14 days of judicial custody to the four accused in the South Calcutta Law College gang rape incident, ANI reported.

The Kolkata Police has arrested the prime accused, Monojit Mishra, and two senior students of the law college, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, and the institution's security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, for their involvement in the June 25 gang rape at the law college.

The detective department probing the inident has uncovered discrepancies in the attendance register, leading to questions about the presence of certain college administrators, including the vice-principal, and students at the time the crime was committed.

Earlier, the police gathered the statements of no less than 56 people in the past 12 days. Of these, 18 statements were identified as crucial to the probe, several of whom will become prime witnesses.

SFI hold protest

Meanwhile, On Tuesday, SFI activists, representing CPI(M)'s student wing, staged protests outside a Howrah district college, calling for disciplinary measures against a TMCP leader accused of mistreating first-year students at the institution two years ago.

Law enforcement prevented demonstrators from accessing Narasinha Dutta College premises in Howrah. The protesters sought action against TMCP leader Souvik Roy, who allegedly appeared in a video harassing and verbally abusing students during a fresher's welcome event.

"We demand the arrest of Roy, TMCP vice president, who had unleashed a threat culture in the college and used to harass ordinary students. The TMCP is filled with such people. They must be identified and arrested," SFI leader Subhajit Sarkar told PTI.

Sarkar indicated that SFI demonstrations would persist until "all Monojit Mishras within TMCP are identified and prosecuted as per law for creating an air of lawlessness in campuses."
