NEW DELHI: India slammed US Commission on International Religious Freedom for its "malicious" report alleging "increasing abuses" against minorities, with ministry of external affairs saying USCIRF would be well advised to utilise its time "more productively on addressing human rights issues in the US".
While the govt didn't mention any specific case, it's rare for India to raise abuse of human rights in the US. India said its views on USCIRF - that it's a biased organisation with a political agenda - are well known. "It continues to misrepresent facts and peddles a motivated narrative about India. We reject this malicious report, which only serves to discredit USCIRF further," said MEA, while urging USCIRF to desist from such agenda-driven efforts.
USCIRF is an "independent, bipartisan" US federal govt agency that monitors universal right to freedom of religion or belief abroad, makes policy recommendations to the President, secretary of state, and Congress and tracks the implementation of these recommendations. In a country update for India, the report said in the lead-up to the June 2024 elections, political officials increasingly wielded hate speech & discriminatory rhetoric against Muslims and other religious minorities.
