NEW DELHI: Up to a 1,000 Indians every year in the age group of 18 to 30 will now be able to “work and holiday” for a year in Australia . Matt Thistlethwaite MP, Australian assistant minister for immigration, launched the “Australian working holiday maker programme” here on Monday. India had officially joined this programme on Sept 16, 2024, becoming Australia’s 50th working holiday maker partner country. This partnership was reached under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA).

“Each program year, Australia may grant a first work and holiday (subclass 462) visa up to 1,000 eligible Indian citizens aged between 18 and 30. Working holiday makers can visit Australia for one year, and work and study short term while holidaying. If they meet certain requirements, they could also apply for a subsequent Work and Holiday visa ,” says the Australian high commission website about this programme.

“From Oct 1 Oct, 2024, eligible Indian passport holders interested in applying for a first work and holiday (subclass 462) visa can register in a visa pre-application (ballot) process for program year 2024-2025. A visa ballot will give those registered the possibility to be randomly selected to apply for a first Work and Holiday visa to Australia. Eligible Indian passport holders interested in applying for a first Work and Holiday visa in 2024-25 can submit an online registration for the visa ballot from 1 October 2024 to 31 October 2024 inclusive. We will conduct random selections of registrations from 14 October 2024 to 30 April 2025. Those randomly selected to apply will be notified by email,” the website says.
