Shannon Sharpe's turbulent career takes another hit with disturbing new allegations and lawsuit

Send Push
ESPN contributor Shannon Sharpe has decided to step away from his duties at the network following a $50 million lawsuit filed by a woman accusing him of rape. The lawsuit, which was filed earlier this week, claims that Sharpe sexually assaulted a woman with whom he had a relationship. This development comes after a series of troubling incidents from Sharpe's past have resurfaced, shedding light on his controversial history.

A history of legal and workplace incidents
The lawsuit, filed by the woman with the help of prominent attorney Tony Buzbee , alleges that Sharpe and the woman had a consensual relationship that later turned sour. According to the lawsuit, tensions escalated when Sharpe went live on Instagram in October 2023, seemingly having sex with another woman. Sharpe claimed that the Instagram Live incident was accidental. Following this, Buzbee released a recording of Sharpe allegedly threatening to choke the woman, which has fueled the claims against him.

In addition to the recent rape allegations, Sharpe's past has come under scrutiny. In 2010, he briefly stepped away from his role as an analyst on CBS's NFL Today after being accused of sexual assault. However, he returned to the network after the restraining order against him was dismissed.

Sharpe's workplace behavior has also been a point of contention. Sources have revealed to Front Office Sports that while Sharpe cohosted FS1's Undisputed from 2016 to 2023, he was accused of choking a female production assistant. The incident, which was never officially reported as a lawsuit, was reportedly settled privately with Fox Sports for several hundred thousand dollars. Sharpe’s representatives denied the choking claim, stating it was a "playful" interaction.

Shannon Sharpe's response and future plans
In light of the serious legal accusations, Sharpe announced his decision to step away from ESPN temporarily. In a statement, he said, "At this juncture I am electing to step aside temporarily from my ESPN duties. I will be devoting this time to my family, and responding and dealing with these false and disruptive allegations set against me." Sharpe added that he plans to return to ESPN at the start of the NFL preseason.

ESPN, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, supported Sharpe's decision, stating, "This is a serious situation, and we agree with Shannon’s decision to step away."

Sharpe’s attorney, Lanny Davis, has defended him against the rape allegations, calling the case a "classic case of blackmail." According to Davis, Sharpe offered $10 million to settle the suit before it was filed, but the negotiations ultimately broke down. Sharpe's legal team maintains that the relationship with the accuser was consensual and that the audio recordings released were part of a role-playing scenario.
