Guwahati: Assam BJP on Thursday termed the saffron party-led state govt’s decision to implement the recommendations made by the Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma committee for Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, signed in 1985, as “historic and promising” for the Assamese community.

A day after the state govt held talks with the All Assam Students Union (Aasu) regarding the implementation of the committee, BJP’s state spokesperson Subhash Dutta said the decision taken under the leadership of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to prepare an action plan within a month for implementing 52 recommendations of the Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma committee report is far-reaching.

He added that the responsibility that CM Sarma-led BJP govt has taken to protect the land, language and culture of the Assamese nation, will yield a successful outcome for a long-standing struggle of the Assamese community.

Clause 6 of the Assam Accord aims to provide constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, and linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people.

After the meeting between the state govt and Aasu, CM Sarma said the govt has decided to implement the recommendations, which include 40 that fall under the state govt’s jurisdiction, 12 that require the concurrence from central govt and 15 that are solely under the centre’s domain. He stated that an action plan would be prepared for implementation of Clause 6.
