Bhopal: A 75-year-old woman, grandmother of a civil judge posted in Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh was strangled to death inside her home in Rajgarh district. The killers also severed off one of her ears to escape with the jewellery she was wearing.

The deceased identified as Savitri Bai Rathore was alone at her home in Sarangpur in Rajgarh district.

The murder is believed to have occurred in the early morning hours on Friday, but the body was found only on Saturday as neighbours grew suspicious when they didn't see. When the milkman called her and she didn't respond he went inside and checked her after forcing open the door only to find her lifeless.

Neighbours alerted the police. Initial findings suggest she was targeted by thieves who broke in, possibly at night, and killed her when she resisted. Evidence also indicates that the murder may have occurred more than 24 hours before she was found dead, said police officers.

Police found one of her ears was severed, likely during the theft of her earrings. Family members suspect that more gold and silver jewellery may have been looted from the house.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, and police are going through the CCTV footage, neighborhood intel, and forensic clues to track down the culprits.

Locals say the area has been grappling with rampant drug abuse, and suspect the involvement of addicts.
