NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday closed the defamation suit filed by Anjali Birla, daughter of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla , against social media platforms regarding false claims about her UPSC exam clearance.
The court ordered the removal of defamatory posts after social media platform X reported that 12 of 16 disputed posts were voluntarily removed, while access to the remaining four was restricted.
Justice Jyoti Singh's bench directed X to remove the remaining four posts and any additional defamatory content brought to their attention by Birla. Google was also ordered to delete a previously blocked post.
The High Court had initially issued directions to Google Inc. and X Corp (formerly Twitter) in July 2023 to remove posts falsely alleging that Anjali Birla cleared the UPSC exam in her first attempt due to her father's influence.
The court also imposed restrictions on unidentified defendants, preventing them from making further defamatory allegations related to the matter.
Anjali Birla, an IRPS officer, had initiated legal proceedings to address misleading social media posts that falsely connected her UPSC success to political influence.
The plaintiff highlighted that various social media posts were spreading false and defamatory information, misrepresenting facts and damaging her reputation.
The lawsuit argued that these unfounded allegations were being deliberately circulated to unlawfully damage the plaintiff's credibility through defamatory narratives.
The suit alleged that certain individuals were attempting to tarnish her professional reputation without factual basis, apparently to generate controversy against the present government.
The plaintiff's legal action aimed to prevent defendants from misusing and damaging the reputation of her and her family, including her father, Om Birla, the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. She maintained that there was a coordinated effort to spread false and disparaging information that could harm their standing.
The court's decision effectively addressed the removal of defamatory content while establishing measures to prevent future false allegations regarding Anjali Birla's UPSC examination success.
