Kartik Purnima 2024: Discover the Spiritual Significance and Dos and Don'ts

One of the most significant months in Hinduism is Kartik. It's during the month of Kartik that, Hindu deity Lord Vishnu awakens from his four-month-long yoga nidra , after which auspicious and ceremonial activities begin. The last day of the month, known as Kartik Purnima, is regarded as particularly holy and favourable. This day also coincides with the celebrations of Dev Deepavali and Guru Nanak Jayanti, making Kartik Purnima spiritually and religiously significant. In 2024, Kartik Purnima will be observed on 15th November.On this auspicious day, a large number of devotees take ritual baths in sacred rivers and offer charity according to their capacity. One of the most important ritual is that of "Deep daan". However, scriptures also advise against certain actions on Kartik Purnima, cautioning that neglecting these can have negative effects on one’s life.

Things to Avoid on Kartik Purnima
  • Do Not Send Anyone Away Empty-Handed: If someone comes to your door on this day, do not let them leave empty-handed. The day calls for charity and kindness, especially towards the poor, needy, and elderly. Speaking harsh words to them should also be avoided.
  • Avoid Insulting Others: While it is always wise to refrain from disrespecting anyone, it is particularly important on Kartik Purnima.
  • Eat a Sattvic Diet and practise celibacy
  • Avoid Donating Certain Items: While giving charity on Kartik Purnima is considered highly meritorious, one should avoid donating items such as silver utensils or milk-based products. Doing so can invoke ‘Chandra dosh’.
  • It is essential to keep every room in the house well-lit to invite goddess Lakshmi.
  • By observing these guidelines and engaging in pious activities, one can harness the true blessings and spiritual benefits of Kartik Purnima.
