Srinagar: An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 struck Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday but there were no reports of any loss of life or damage to property, officials said.The quake occurred at 10:43 am in the Afghanistan region, officials told PTI.The tremors were felt in the Kashmir Valley, causing panic among the people as they rushed outdoors.The 2005 Kashmir Earthquake, which struck on October 8, 2005, was one of the most devastating seismic events in the region's history. With a magnitude of 7.6, its epicentre was located near Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), but it caused widespread destruction across Jammu and Kashmir in India. The earthquake claimed over 80,000 lives in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, while the death toll in Jammu and Kashmir was also significant, with hundreds of people killed and thousands more injured.Earlier in November, a minor earthquake struck near Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, at a depth of approximately 10 jm, causing weak tremors felt by residents in surrounding areas. According to the Richter scale, the quake recorded a magnitude of 4.3.Tremors were felt in several locations, including Ranchi and Taimad, prompting residents to evacuate their homes. The tremors lasted around five seconds and were strongest near the epicentre, in the east of Chandil. Despite noticeable shaking in nearby areas, including Jamshedpur and Chakradharpur, no immediate damage or injuries were reported.The tremors, classified as intensity III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, were felt as far away as Patna, Bihar, approximately 308 km north of the epicentre, although intensity diminished with distance.Residents reported mixed reactions, with many describing the sensation as a brief rattling.
