With its sweeping golden sands and dramatic chalk cliffs, Botany Bay in Kent has earned its place among the UK's most beautiful beaches.
Frequently topping "best beach" lists, it offers a quieter, more scenic alternative to nearby tourist hotspots like Margate Main Sands and Broadstairs' Viking Bay. Most recently it topped Conde Nast's list for best beaches in the UK. But the publication warned visitors hoping for a tranquil day at the coast are being warned to do a little research before choosing their sunbathing spot.
This coastal gem, located just outside Broadstairs, draws beachgoers in search of clear waters, stunning views, and fewer crowds. Families and day-trippers alike often arrive early, veering right off the main path to stake out a prime position for a full day of seaside relaxation.
However, head left along the bay and you might encounter a rather different kind of beach experience.
Conde Nast Traveller said: "Alternatively, head left for a quieter stretch - but be warned, there is a nudist stretch of beach towards the far end."
Locals and seasoned visitors are reminding newcomers that a stretch of Botany Bay is traditionally known for its clothing-optional section.
While the nudist area is discreet and clearly separated toward the far end of the beach, those unfamiliar with the layout may be surprised to stumble across it accidentally.
"It's a beautiful beach, but people should just be aware of where they're walking, especially if they have kids or aren't expecting it," said one visitor on Trip Advisor. "It's not a problem at all, it's just something to know in advance."
Despite the potential surprise, Botany Bay remains a favourite for many, with families praising its safe swimming areas, fascinating rock pools, and photogenic white cliffs.
The beach is especially popular in summer, with visitors bringing tents, umbrellas, and enough snacks to last the day.
Whether you're seeking a peaceful family day by the sea or a more liberating beach experience, Botany Bay offers something for everyone, just be sure to choose your direction wisely.
