The incredible 85-mile island rail journey that's 'one of the world's most beautiful'

A through Sri Lanka between Kandy and Ella is often described as one of the most beautiful rides in the world.

The whole route stretches 85-miles and is popular with and locals. It's known for stunning views of tea plantations, mountains and local villages among many other things.

Speaking exclusively to the Express about the journey, travel expert and the founder of , Paul Fournier said: "Not long ago, I found myself on the train from Kandy to Ella, a journey people say is one of the most beautiful in the world.

"They're not wrong. It's slow and rattles along through mist-covered tea plantations and mountain valleys, giving you a front-row seat to rural life.

"Local vendors hop on at random stops, selling chai and samosas out of plastic baskets, adding a bit of flavour to the experience.

"By the time you reach Ella, you feel like the journey itself was half the adventure.

"Once there, you have to hike up to Little Adam's Peak - it's a quiet escape from the crowds with a view that makes the climb worth it."

The train journey lasts between five and seven hours depending on the service and offers views that many consider highlights of a trip to Sri Lanka.

The route has gained so much popularity that often sell out in advance, especially on weekends.

Travellers can book tickets up to 37 days in advance through online agencies, as the Sri Lanka Railway doesn't yet have an official online booking option.

Tickets are also available at local train stations within 10 to 30 days before the journey. Prices range between £1 and £3, depending on the class of travel.

Fournier suggested that those travelling with unreserved second- or third-class tickets may have to stand if they can't find a seat.

Once the journey reaches Ella, many travellers head to Little Adam's Peak. It's a popular hiking spot with gorgeous views.
