Newcastle are still determined to avoid selling Alexander Isak despite their interest in signing Hugo Ekitike, according to reports. The Magpies are eager to improve their attacking options between now and the start of next season. They have already signed Anthony Elanga and Antonito Cordero but recruiting another out-and-out striker is said to be a big priority.
Ekitike has been identified as a top target by Newcastle, with the Frenchman said to be attracting interest from several top clubs. He has also been linked with Liverpool and Chelsea but it seems the Tyneside outfit have emerged as the prime contenders. Any move will certainly not come cheap, with Ekitike having a release clause of around £86million.
Even though Newcastle are seriously interested in bringing the 23-year-old to St James' Park, it does not mean they are warming to the idea of selling Isak.
According to The Telegraph, senior figures still intend to offer the Swede a new contract and have no interest in letting him leave. They want Ekitike to rotate with Isak in the knowledge he will be unable to play in every single game.
Newcastle will compete on four fronts next season, having qualified for the Champions League for the second time in three years. They will also have three domestic competitions to contend with, meaning the ability to rotate their players will be crucial.
As things stand, William Osula is the only other striker at the club following the exit of Callum Wilson as a free agent. Newcastle are said to recognise the benefits of signing another forward to provide cover for Isak when he needs to be rested.
Isak continues to be linked with a potential move elsewhere, with Liverpool and Arsenal known to be long-term admirers. However, it seems clear that he will be staying at Newcastle unless he becomes the subject of a truly ridiculous offer.
He is thought to have a price tag of around £150m, a huge figure which reflects Newcastle's strong desire to keep him around.
Eddie Howe has made it clear that he is opposed to selling Isak, saying earlier this year: "Alexander is not for sale. I want to build a squad, I want the strongest possible squad for next season.
"We have a strong squad and if we can add some players for the first time in a few transfer windows, that will make a big difference for us. That's what I'm focused on, not the other way around."
Isak played 34 league games for Newcastle last season, chipping in with 23 goals. He is currently tied down until the summer of 2028 and is thought to be earning around £120,000 per week.
