Manchester United may not have to wait long to complete their third signing of the summer transfer window after announcing Diego Leon's arrival on Saturday. The 18-year-old left-back has joined in an initial £3.3million move from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno, following Matheus Cunha through the Old Trafford arrivals suite.
But United's most prominent transfer pursuit since Cunha's £62.5m switch from Wolves has involved Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. The Bees have rejected two bids worth £45m plus £10m and £55m plus £7.5m since Mbeumo confirmed his desire for a move to Manchester.
United have been expected to table a third offer since their latest rebuff last weekend, but that approach has not yet arrived.
The Red Devils wanted to secure Mbeumo's signature before Ruben Amorim's squad returned to Carrington for pre-season training on Monday.
That now appears unlikely and could complicate the deal, considering the 25-year-old forward will also be expected back at Brentford to start preparations for next term.
However, United have already leapt over a significant hurdle in their pursuit of Mbeumo, which has left the transfer feeling imminent once Brentford's demands are met.
Because while the west London club are holding out for a package higher than Cunha's, as well as at least £60m of the fee guaranteed, the player's side has sanctioned a switch.

Mbeumo reportedly reached an agreement on personal terms with United when he approved the move to M16 amid rival interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
That agreement would make the completion of the transfer quick once Brentford are convinced to part ways with their most prized asset.
It would be a surprise if news of a third offer did not surface early next week at the latest, given the saga has now surpassed the month mark.
If successful, Mbeumo would likely be a United player by the end of the week, and in time to feature in all of the club's pre-season fixtures.

The Red Devils start their schedule against Leeds United in Stockholm on July 19 before travelling for their tour of the United States.
Fixtures against West Ham United, Bournemouth, and Everton await Amorim's squad across the Atlantic before Fiorentina visit Old Trafford on August 8.
Amorim will view it as crucial that he reshapes his squad as early as possible, given United's daunting start to the Premier League season.
Clashes against Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea make up their first five matches in a Europe-less campaign where domestic results are vital.
