
and Raiders of the Lost Ark star at the age of 84, after winning an Oscar in his career as an art director and production designer. His family confirmed that he died on May 20th from Alzheimer's complications, releasing an emotional statement.
It read: "Les's legacy lives on in the many iconic films he helped bring to life for over six decades and in his family home he personally built as an homage to his work. His love for the motion picture business was evident to the very end. When he wasn't on set, he enjoyed constructing things in his workshop at home, playing ice hockey, and a good cup of tea. In addition to his incredible work ethic, quirky British humor, and love of life, he was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He will be greatly missed."
Dilley had an extensive career, working on flick Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, both of which won him Academy Awards for best art direction. He was also nominated for his work on Alien, The Empire Strikes Back and The Abyss. By 2020 he had been honoured with a BAFTA for his contributions to British cinema.
He also worked on films like flick From Russia With Love, Jesus Christ Superstar and An American Werewolf in London, as well as Superman and The Three Musketeers.
Dilley is survived by his wife Leslie, to whom he was married for 38 years. They shared four children - Sophia, Leslie II, Ivory and Leslie III. Les also had a daughter, Georgia, from his previous marriage to Amanda Dilley.
Tributes have been flooding in from fans on social media, with one tweeting: "RIP legend. The world owes a tremendous thanks to Les Dilley. The films that have touched billions of hearts would not have been possible without his work."
Another echoed: "So many iconic images Les Dilley help create, RIP to a great." As a Star Wars fan account echoed: "We're deeply saddened to hear of Les Dilley's passing at 84. An Oscar-winning production designer, Dilley helped shape the look of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."
