The long-standing debate over how frequently bed sheets should be washed and at what temperature has been settled, with experts recommending a weekly wash. Specialists at Pizua Linens have uncovered some disturbing bedroom hygiene truths that could affect your sleep habits, noting: "Dust mites reproduce exceptionally fast and take up residence in places such as mattresses, bedding, and headboards."
As soon as the weather cools off and activities shift indoors, dust mites start to populate. Dust mites are eight-legged, microscopic creatures. They live in warm areas with high humidity, and they look for places with human hair and animal skin cells, their source of food. Wherever you're living, they're also living there for 20 to 70 days. However, there is a way to get rid of them during your laundry routine, and you don't need any cleaning chemicals.
The specialists provided multiple tactics to deter these uninvited lodgers, including washing bedding at the optimal temperature. To destroy bacteria, they advise washing all linens, including pillowcases, on a 60-degree cycle, noting: "This temperature is correct for killing dust mites, bacteria and allergens."
The NHS also advises washing at 60 degrees; however, they noted that dust mites also dissolve in water, so washing at lower temperatures will wash the allergen away temporarily, but the mites will survive and produce more allergen after a while.
Since dust mites flourish in warm, moist environments, it's crucial to guarantee your bedding is completely dry before putting it away. If sheets are stored or put back on the bed while still damp, it could lead to mould and more dust mites.
However, Clare, a linen expert from Belle Dorm, has shared another really simple way to keep dust mites and other tiny bugs at bay - and all you need to do is open a window.
Clare said: "Once in a while, air your bedroom by leaving the windows open and pulling your sheets back, which will help fight germs, bed bugs and dust mites."
Pulling back the sheets allows moisture to evaporate rather than soak into the bedding, which helps keep your bed much more hygienic.
Opening up a window to help air out bedding is very simple and one of the best ways to keep your bed dry, which will discourage any germs or dust mites from crawling on your sheets.
All you need to do is open a window for 10 minutes in the morning, and then pull your duvet and any blankets to the bottom of your bed. You can then leave the bedding to freshen it up, or close your window and make your bed.
