As the summer warmth diminishes and the days subtly shorten, late August and September present a key moment for houseplant lovers to consider propagation. This transitional period has the ideal conditions for encouraging stronger root growth, preparing the plant for flourishing well into the cooler months.
Propagation during this time is an accessible and affordable way to "multiply your plants and spread the greenery," according to Jo Lambell, Founder of Beards & Daisies. The expert also highlighted three houseplants that are ideal for propagation in August and September. These options are resilient and rewarding for both beginner and experienced plant enthusiasts.
1. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
Late summer has ideal conditions for propagating Pothos, as the cuttings root "easily" in warm temperatures and bright, indirect light.
To propagate, take a four to six-inch cutting just below a node, remove the lower leaves, and place it in water. Roots typically appear within one to two weeks, and once they reach about an inch long, the new plant can be potted.
2. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
Spider plants naturally produce offshoots called 'pups,' perfect for propagation during August and September, as these hardy plants recover quickly and thrive in bright, indirect light, making them ideal for beginners.
Jo advised: "Snip off a pup that has small nubs or roots already visible. You can place it directly into water or soil."
3. Peperomia (Peperomia obtusifolia, caperata, etc.)
Peperomia varieties are well-suited to late summer propagation through leaf or stem cuttings, and new growth usually emerges within a few weeks under warm, humid conditions.
Jo suggested: "Cut a healthy leaf with a short stem or a piece of stem with a few leaves attached. Pop it in moist soil and keep the humidity high using a plastic dome or bag."
