Emma Raducanu wants big Wimbledon change after linking up with Carlos Alcaraz

Emma Raducanu has called on Wimbledon to introduce an all-star mixed doubles event after the "huge success" of the new event at the US Open this week. The British No.1 lost her only match with fellow US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz against Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula.

And the only regular doubles pair - Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori - claimed the $1million first prize from the singles superstars. But the new 16-team event was a big hit with fans in the stadium and on social media and is set to be back at Flushing Meadows in future years. And Raducanu said: "I think it would be so fun if all the Slams got involved and did something similar, even if it was not the exact same format.

"I think it was a huge success. I think so many fans got involved, so many people watched and tuned in. It got a lot of attention. I think it was a great idea. And, yeah, I had a lot of fun on the court playing with Carlos."

Before the final Grand Slam of the season, Raducanu has appointed Spaniard Francis Roig as her new coach to replace caretaker Mark Petchey.

And the 2021 US Open champion reckoned her last match at Wimbledon against Aryna Sabalenka encouraged Rafa Nadal's former coach to take the job.

"After Wimbledon, we always knew it was going to be difficult to keep things going forward with his commitments and everything," she said. "It was quite a good match with Aryna. I think quite a lot of people watched it. I think it helped my case, so I'm happy about that.

"After that, I just asked (agent) Jill (Smoller), who is looking after me, and I was like: 'Oh, do we have any more ideas?' Because ideally I wanted to come into the U.S. swing knowing I had someone in a coach. That's how it happened.

"We arranged a few days before I came out to America. Yeah, it went well, but he couldn't start until Cincy. Since then we have been practicing and working well."

Fran Jones has emulated Raducanu's feat of qualifying for the US Open without dropping a set after following Carlos Alcaraz to Ibiza. The British No.4 was immediately congratulated by her close friend Raducanu after reaching the main draw in New York for the first time.

Raducanu also came through three qualifying matches without dropping a set here in 2021 - and then another seven in the main draw - to become the first qualifier to ever win a Grand Slam title.

"What she did I don't think will ever be repeated but I'll be happy to fall into some of those footsteps for sure," Jones laughed. "She said good luck before the match and texted her congratulations just now. We speak every day."

Jones, 24, took a break in the Balearics like the Spanish superstar before crossing the Atlantic. "I thought I'd try the Alcaraz strategy so I went to Ibiza for a few days," she said. "It worked. So we can't complain can we?"
