An 82-year-old Welshman has been confirmed as one of the victims of the Lisbon funicular crash in the Portuguese capital last week.

Holyhead local and train enthusiast Andrew David Kenneth Young has been named as one of the victims. He was among one of the 16 victims killed in the tram disaster in the Portuguese capital on Wednesday. Andrew was a transport enthusiast who travelled the world to visit heritage railways and tramways.

The Gloria Funicular is believed to have lost control due to a loose cable, hurtling down a steep hill before smashing into a building and crumpling "like a cardboard box", according to witnesses, reports The Mirror.

Teresa d'Avo, who witnessed the horror collision, told Portuguese TV channel SIC: "It crashed into a building with brutal force and fell apart like a cardboard box. It crashed with tremendous force. It didn't have any kind of brakes." Another said the lift was heading towards them from above "completely out of control."

Tributes have been laid for those who died in the incident.
