Why is white foam forming in the Yamuna?

Send Push

Delhi's Yamuna river is in the news again these days, especially during Chhath Puja. Every year before Chhath, the water of Yamuna is filled with white foam, which looks as beautiful as it is poisonous and dangerous in reality. This foam can cause many diseases, but still people bathe in it and worship due to faith. Now the question arises: why does this white foam form only in Yamuna, while such a sight is not seen in other rivers?

How is white foam formed in Yamuna?

The biggest reason for the formation of white foam in the Yamuna is industrial and urban waste. There are many factories in Delhi and its surrounding areas that release their chemical waste into the Yamuna without filtering it. Apart from this, dirty sewage from many parts of Delhi and Noida also falls into the Yamuna. Due to all this, the water of the Yamuna becomes polluted and white foam starts forming in it due to chemical processes.

Which chemicals are responsible?

The main reason for this white foam is phosphate, which is found in the waste from factories and sewage. When this phosphate mixes with the water of Yamuna, it has a chemical effect and foam starts forming. Apart from this, detergents and other chemicals also play an important role in the formation of foam. Due to the high amount of phosphate in Yamuna, the problem of white foam is increasing year after year.

Why is white foam not seen in other rivers?

Now the question arises as to why such white foam is not seen in other rivers. Actually, foam is formed in other rivers as well, but its quantity is less. The problem is more in Yamuna because the level of industrial waste and urban garbage is very high here. A lot of waste falls into Yamuna from the sewage system of Delhi-Noida, due to which the problem of foam becomes much more than other rivers. Apart from this, the flow in Yamuna is also slow at this time, due to which the foam collects and gets deposited on the banks and becomes clearly visible.

The dangers of foaming

This white foam may look attractive, but it is extremely dangerous. Bathing in it can cause skin diseases, allergies, and other serious diseases. Still, people bathe in it out of faith. This is a serious sign of pollution, which tells us how urgently Yamuna needs to be cleaned. The formation of white foam in Yamuna not only highlights the problem of pollution, but it is also a big threat to our environment and health. Due to improper management of factories and sewage, the water of Yamuna is becoming poisonous. Now is the time for the government and society to take concrete steps together to clean and preserve Yamuna so that future generations can get a clean Yamuna.
