The Indian Navy's INS Kalpeni reached Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Weekend, receiving a warm welcome from the Sri Lankan Navy. This visit is part of efforts to enhance maritime cooperation between the two nations, aligning with India's Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) vision.

The Indian Navy shared the news on social media, stating, "Indian Navy's Water Jet Fast Attack Craft INS Kalpeni arrived at Colombo, Sri Lanka, October 19, 2024." They emphasized the purpose of the visit, noting that it aims to further strengthen maritime cooperation in line with the SAGAR vision.

During its stay, the Indian Navy is set to engage in various activities with the Sri Lankan Navy. The Navy mentioned that the crew of the ship would participate in official interactions and social events to foster relationships between the two forces.

The High Commission of India in Sri Lanka also highlighted the warm reception for INS Kalpeni, noting that the ship’s Commanding Officer, Commander Sunil Kulhari, would meet with Rear Admiral Chinthaka Kumarasinghe, Commander of the Western Naval Area.

INS Kalpeni, a Car Nicobar class Waterjet Fast Attack Craft, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on October 14, 2010. Named after Kalpeni Island in the Lakshadweep archipelago, the ship is based in Kochi and primarily focuses on coastal surveillance and defense. Its capabilities include anti-smuggling operations, vessel boarding, search and seizure, and search and rescue missions.

The port call, taking place from October 19-21, 2024, is termed an Operational Turn Around. INS Kalpeni has brought essential technical support tools to be handed over to the Sri Lankan Navy. Alongside replenishing supplies, the ship's crew will also visit significant locations in and around Colombo.

This visit further enhances the cooperation and camaraderie between the Indian and Sri Lankan Navies, reflecting India’s 'Neighbourhood First' policy and the Prime Minister's vision for SAGAR. Earlier this year, INS Kabra, a similar vessel, visited Colombo, delivering spare parts to the Sri Lankan Navy and Air Force.
