In the last three to four months, one name has captured the imagination of Indian cricket fans like no other — Vaibhav Suryavanshi. At just 14 years old, Vaibhav has already made history by debuting in the IPL, the world’s second biggest sporting league. He stunned everyone by smashing a six on the very first ball he faced and went on to score a blazing century off just 35 balls. These spectacular feats have made him an overnight sensation, and wherever he steps onto the field, all eyes follow.
Now, Vaibhav faces his real challenge. The upcoming Under-19 ODI series between India and England is set to kick off, and once again, the spotlight will be on this young prodigy.
The series will see all three formats of cricket played between the Indian Under-19 team and their English counterparts over the coming days. The opening Youth ODI is scheduled for Friday, 27 June, at Hove — the home ground of Sussex County Cricket Club. Interestingly, this is also the home ground of England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer, who recently made his return to England’s Test side.
Joining Vaibhav in this series is another exciting young talent, 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre, who has also made waves with his batting and currently leads the team as captain. Yet, the spotlight remains firmly on 14-year-old Vaibhav, whose debut alongside Archer in the IPL created waves. While Vaibhav had the chance to face Archer’s fiery pace during Rajasthan Royals’ practice sessions, the challenge of playing on Archer’s home turf promises a different test altogether.
Though Vaibhav won’t face Archer directly in this match, playing in England marks a significant milestone — it will be Vaibhav’s first major cricketing experience outside Asia. So far, his incredible performances in the IPL, Under-19 four-day matches against Australia, and the Under-19 Asia Cup have all come on Indian or South Asian soil. Now, he steps onto English pitches — a venue where many cricket legends have stumbled.
How Vaibhav Suryavanshi performs on this challenging foreign turf will be a defining moment in his young career and something cricket fans across India will be eager to witness.
