The Indian team has been announced for the England tour. A five-match Test series will be played between the two teams next month. After Rohit Sharma's retirement, Shubman Gill was appointed as the new Test captain of the Indian team. However, in-form Shreyas Iyer has once again faced the neglect of the selectors. Now the statement of the current head coach Gautam Gambhir has come on this.
Why was Shreyas Iyer overlooked?
Shreyas Iyer has not been included in the 18-member squad selected for the Test series against England. The 30-year-old batsman has played 14 Test matches for India so far. In these, he scored 811 runs with the help of one century and five half-centuries. He was last seen playing in this format against England last year when the team came on a tour to India. When Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir was asked a question about Shreyas Iyer, he said - 'I am not a selector.'
Iyer shone in Ranji and IPL.
The right-handed batsman had a brilliant performance in Ranji Trophy 2024-25. He scored 480 runs in seven innings for Mumbai with two centuries at an average of 68.57. Now he is leading Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 and is looking in strong form. In 14 innings, Shreyas has scored 514 runs at a strike rate of 171.90. Under his leadership, the Punjab team will now play in the playoffs.
Gambhir happy to call army chiefs in IPL final
During this, Gambhir praised the invitation of CDS along with the three army chiefs to the IPL 2025 final. He also praised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for this. Gambhir said, 'This is an incredible step. BCCI has taken a good initiative. It shows that the whole country is one and is saluting our armed forces. I give credit to the armed forces for protecting us without any selfishness.'
BCCI will celebrate the success of Operation Sindoor
The BCCI has decided to celebrate the success of Operation Sindoor and under this, the board has invited CDS, Army Chief as well as Air Force and Navy Chief for the closing ceremony. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, the board salutes the bravery, courage, and selfless service of our armed forces, whose Operation Sindoor protected the nation with heroic efforts and inspired us. As a mark of respect, we have decided to dedicate the closing ceremony to the armed forces. We have invited the three army chiefs, rank officers, and soldiers of the Indian Army for the final match to be held in Ahmedabad for the success of Operation Sindoor. It is worth mentioning that the title match of the 18th season of IPL will be played on June 3 (Tuesday) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and the BCCI has also started its preparations.
Know about Operation Sindoor
India carried out precision strikes on terrorist hideouts under Operation Sindoor on May 7. This action was taken in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22. After this, Pakistan tried to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10, to which the Indian Army gave a befitting reply. In this retaliation, many military bases in Pakistan were damaged, including air bases, radar sites, and command centers. Panicked by this, Pakistan proposed a ceasefire to India on May 10, which was implemented by both countries after mutual discussions.
Playoff phase begins
The group stage of the IPL 2025 season is now over and the playoffs are starting from Thursday. The teams of Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Gujarat Titans, and Mumbai Indians have reached the IPL playoffs. Punjab will face RCB on Thursday in Qualifier-1, while Mumbai will face Gujarat in the Eliminator on Friday. The team that loses in Qualifier-1 will face the winner of the Eliminator on Sunday. The title match will be played between the winning teams of Qualifier-1 and Qualifier-2 in the final on June 3.
