To reduce the risk of all types of chronic diseases increasing all over the world and to stay healthy, improving eating habits is most important. Improving eating habits means consuming nutritious food and staying away from processed junk foods. We get the vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients required for the body from nutritious food. Is your diet such that the body gets good nutrition and all the essential elements?
Doctors advise people who are unable to fulfill the nutritional requirements of food to take supplements of that vitamin or mineral. Supplements are a form of medicine, so should we start taking supplements in advance to avoid the deficiency of vitamins and minerals?
Side-effects of supplements
In today's busy life, the trend of supplements i.e. vitamins, minerals, omega-3 capsules, protein powder, etc. has increased rapidly. People have started using them as if they are a panacea to avoid diseases. But do you know that if you keep taking supplements without consulting a doctor, it can cause many types of damage to the body?
According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, about 23,000 people visit the hospital emergency department every year due to side effects caused by supplements.
Not only young adults were affected by this, but many children under the age of 4 have also seen its side effects such as allergic reactions or digestive symptoms (nausea, vomiting, stomach pain).
Taking too many supplements can be harmful.
According to a report by Harvard Medical School, excessive intake of fat-soluble vitamins such as (A, D, E, and K) can accumulate in the body and cause toxicity.
Excessive vitamin A can cause liver damage, and excessive amounts of iron tablets can cause constipation-vomiting, and oxidative stress.
Many other types of supplements increase the load on the kidneys and liver.
Some supplements, such as vitamin K, can react with blood thinners, which can lead to serious health risks.
Similarly, excess of vitamin B6 can affect the nerves.
What do experts say?
Doctors say that taking supplements on your own can sometimes be harmful instead of beneficial. Without testing, you do not know which vitamin mineral is lacking or in excess in the body. In such a situation, if you start taking such pills without medical advice, the amount of that particular nutrient in the body may increase too much.
As important as every vitamin-mineral is, its excess can also have equally serious side effects.
