Confirmation that one of Netflix's most popular shows will not be returning has infuriated fans.
The show, which ran for two seasons and received high praise at the time of its release, was placed into a state of limbo after it was confirmed were not ready to option a third season. It has now been confirmed the show will not return for further episodes.
While the show's executive producer has confirmed there is a reason Netflix are not keen to continue the show, fans were left wondering about the logic behind the cancellation.

A post to X confirmed the show was too big an investment to continue with, which had fans wondering just how much the show had cost to make.
The post, which quotes Mindhunter producer , reads: "It's a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn't attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment." Fans were puzzled by Fincher's explanation – as they did not realise the show had cost so much to make.
One user wrote: "90% of this show was conversations in jails how expensive could it possibly have been. I know Fincher likes to use a lot of greenscreen and such but, c'mon they just spent eleventy zillion dollars on a three body problem adaptation that no one watched."
Another agreed: “Y’all filmed in two rooms and a parking lot, where did the budget go.” And a third added: “For real though, they just VISIT criminals. How expensive would the budget be?”
Fans were horrified to learn Mindhunter would not be returning for a third series, with the Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany show a hit with fans right from the pilot.
Rotten Tomatoes shows the quality of the show, with 97% of critics loving the show, and 95% of audiences also rating the show highly.
Despite rave reviews the show will not be returning for a third season, and instead it seems the show is destined to be left unresolved. Mindhunter followed FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench as they interviewed known serial killers to better understand the psychological reasons for crime.
While many were upset by the show's cancellation, they say the special effects used on the show could be a reason the budget ballooned to a much higher number.
One user wrote: "The locations, settings, multiple screens, longer shooting, VFX work, crew and Fincher's own salary. With David everything is expensive but, in my opinion, is worthy. Although for Netflix and their last two Fincher’s projects, it’s not worth the risk."
There may be some slim hope for Mindhunter fans though – with some suggesting other streaming services may want to option the show for a third series. One user theorised: "Even if nobody watches, I think Apple TV would happily plunk down the cash for something like this."
It would not be impossible for the show to switch streaming brands, as was the case for animated comedy Futurama, which was cancelled by Fox and moved to Comedy Central. It was cancelled a second time, and is now part of Hulu's streaming exclusives.
