Bank Holiday tragedy as boy, 13, dies after jumping into Exeter canal

A 13-year-old child has tragically died after jumping into a canal over the bank holiday weekend.

Police, ambulances and the fire service raced to the scene in at around 4.35pm on Monday following a report of concern for the welfare for a child. said it was reported that a had failed to surface after jumping into the water at the Exeter Ship Canal. The young boy was pulled from the water before being given first aid. He was rushed to in a serious condition, where he died. His next of kin have been informed.

Police said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Acting Superintendent Chris Conway said: "This is an awful and tragic incident, and we offer our condolences to the family who are being supported by specialist officers.

"We would ask that the privacy of the family is respected as they come to terms with their devastating loss.”

A file is set to be prepared for the coroner.

A statement from Devon and Cornwall Police said: "A 13-year-old boy has died after being pulled from the canal in Exeter. Emergency services were called at around 4.35pm on Monday 5 May, following a concern for welfare for a child in the canal at Clapperbrook Lane East.

"It was reported that a child had failed to surface after jumping into the canal. Police, fire, and ambulance services were in attendance. The boy was pulled from the water, before receiving first aid.

"He was taken to hospital in a serious condition, where he sadly died. His next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for HM Coroner."
