According to a study published in the Journal of Hypertension (2025), persistently low BP can lead to lack of oxygen in the brain, increasing the risk of dizziness, fainting and brain damage.

People are often not serious about low blood pressure (hypotension), but many researches have revealed that this condition can be very dangerous for health. Let us know how dangerous low BP can be and what should be the diet of patients suffering from it?
How dangerous is low BP?
Taking low blood pressure lightly can be wrong. According to a study published in the Journal of Hypertension (2025), persistent low BP can cause lack of oxygen in the brain, which increases the risk of dizziness, fainting and brain damage. This condition can be especially dangerous in the elderly and pregnant women. If there is excessive bleeding or dehydration, the blood pressure can drop extremely low, which can even lead to death. Dr. Rajat Sharma, a cardiologist at Maxer Super Specialty Hospital in Delhi, says that if problems like frequent dizziness or fainting are occurring along with low BP, then it can be a serious threat to the heart or nervous system.
Why does low BP occur?
There can be many causes of low BP, including dehydration, heart disease, overdose of diabetes medicines or postural hypotension (sudden drop in blood pressure on standing). According to the Indian Journal of Medicine (2024), women are 20% more likely to suffer from low BP than men. In fact, this problem is more common in women after menopause. Its symptoms include dizziness, fatigue, blurred vision and in severe cases, fainting.
How should be the diet of low BP patients?
Diet plays an important role in controlling low BP. According to the Journal of Nutrition (2025), a diet rich in salt (sodium) and nutrients helps in balancing blood pressure. Let us tell you what the diet of low BP patients should be like.
- Eat more salt: Sodium helps increase blood pressure because it retains water in the body. Salty snacks like salty biscuits, pickles or soups can be very beneficial in case of low BP. 3-5 grams of extra salt a day may be safe, but heart patients should consult a doctor. Eating too much salt can be harmful.
- Potassium and magnesium rich foods: Potassium rich foods like bananas, oranges, spinach, and almonds help stabilize blood pressure. Potassium corrects sodium imbalance. Magnesium rich food items like cashews and pulses are also beneficial.
- Protein and healthy fats: Eating protein foods like eggs, chicken and fish improves blood circulation. Healthy fats like almonds, walnuts and ghee also keep energy and blood pressure stable. Healthy fats improve heart health.
- Hydration: Lack of water is the main reason for low BP. One should drink 2-3 liters of water a day. At the same time, electrolyte-rich drinks like coconut water and buttermilk also help in increasing blood pressure. Let us tell you that the problem of low BP can increase up to 25 percent due to dehydration.
do not eat these things even by mistake
- Salt-free food: Patients suffering from low BP should not eat salt-free food. This can further reduce their blood pressure.
- Excessive consumption of alcohol and caffeine: This can also affect blood pressure.
- Processed food: You should also avoid eating packed snacks and junk food. These increase the risk of low BP.
