Mumbai Coastal Road Seaside Promenade To Open On July 15; BMC To Deploy Mechanical Sweepers, Public Toilets Planned

Mumbai: The much-anticipated opening of Mumbai Coastal Road seaside promenade is scheduled for July 15. In preparation for public access, the BMC will deploy mechanised sweeping machines to carry out daily cleaning along the stretch.

Additionally, the project includes construction of public toilets to cater to both daily commuters and recreational visitors, ensuring improved civic amenities along the stretch.

The two sections of the Coastal Road promenade set to open in the first phase include a 2.75 km stretch from Tata Garden to Haji Ali, and a 2.5 km section between Lovegrove Nullah (Worli Gutter) and B.M. Thackeray Chowk.

Together, these stretches will provide nearly 5.25 km of public access along Mumbai’s western coastline. According to civic officials, the entire 7.5 km promenade will be completed in phases over the next two and half years.

The Solid Waste Management Department will deploy mechanical sweeping machines to clean the Coastal Road promenade once it opens to the public.

A senior civic official said, “While the Coastal Road opened in phases over the past year, there was no public access, so only dust accumulated. However, with anticipated rising footfall, the Coastal Road authority has requested regular cleaning of the promenade. Given the scale, manual sweeping won’t be practical, so three large and two small mechanical sweeping machines will be used to maintain cleanliness.”

The BMC has appointed Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) to develop 53 hectares of reclaimed open space along the Coastal Road under a Rs. 400-crore project, fully funded through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions.

RIL will submit a detailed landscape design for approval under CRZ norms and Supreme Court directives. As part of the project, bio-toilets will be installed for tourist convenience.

Meanwhile, the BMC will set up temporary porta cabin toilets for six months to one year at four underpass locations: Amarsans Garden, Mahalaxmi Temple, Worli Dairy, and Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk.

The Coastal Road project features a 10.58-km, 8-lane expressway connecting Worli to Marine Drive, with an estimated cost of Rs. 13,984 crore. Alongside, an 8-metre-wide promenade and a 3 to 4-metre-wide cycle track are being developed to enhance public access and recreational space.
