According to the Drik Panchang, this year the Navami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month will start on August 16 at 09:34 pm and will end on August 17 at 07:24 pm. In such a situation, Dahi Handi will be celebrated on Saturday, 16 August 2025. This festival is organized especially on the ninth day of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. From the Dwapar Yuga till today, this festival is celebrated with great pomp.
How did this tradition start?
According to mythological beliefs, when Shri Krishna was young, he used to go with his friends to steal butter from the nearby houses. Troubled by this mischief, the gopis of the village started hanging the butter pots at a high place. But Shri Krishna and his friends formed a human pyramid and started stealing those pots as well. This leela is celebrated today in the form of Dahi Handi.

Dahi Handi festival is celebrated on a large scale, especially in Maharashtra. There are competitions between the groups of Govindas in the streets here, and an attempt is made to break the highest pot. Apart from this, this festival is celebrated with great pomp in places like Mathura, Vrindavan, and Gokul in Uttar Pradesh.

During the festival, traditional bhajans and cultural programs are also celebrated with great pomp. The main purpose of this event is to bring alive the childhood antics of Shri Krishna, when he used to steal butter along with his friends.
