Peacock spotted in unlikely heights in Uttarakhand. Is climate change to blame? Here's why it matters

Send Push
In a surprising turn of events, a peacock has been spotted in the mountainous region of Bageshwar in the Kumaon Himalayas, leaving wildlife experts baffled. Typically found in lowland forests and warmer plains, peacocks are rarely seen at such high elevations, making this sighting highly unusual.

Experts noted that peacocks generally inhabit areas up to 1,600 feet above sea level. However, the bird was recently spotted in a forest near Bageshwar, which sits at an altitude of around 6,500 feet. The discovery has raised questions about why the bird ventured to such heights, prompting further investigation.

A rare occurrence in Bageshwar

Local residents were the first to observe the peacock in Kafligair, a village located 30 kilometers from Bageshwar at an elevation of over 5,200 feet. The bird was initially sighted two months ago, sparking interest among the locals. In response, the forest department set up camera traps in the area to monitor its movements and gather more data on the bird’s presence.

Could climate change be a factor?
Wildlife experts are exploring whether this rare sighting is an isolated event or part of a larger environmental shift that could be linked to climate change. Changes in animal migration and habitat patterns are often seen as indicators of broader ecological changes, and the appearance of a peacock at this altitude could be a warning sign.

As per a TOI report, B S Adhikari, a scientist from the Wildlife Institute of India in Dehradun, expressed concern about the sighting, stating, "This is no doubt an abnormal event. Peacocks are known to reside in plains and forested areas. Their presence in mountainous regions may indicate climate or environmental changes, which requires detailed investigation."

Wildlife experts investigating possible causes
Shyam Singh Karayat, a ranger with the Bageshwar forest department, shared that changing weather patterns and habitat shifts may be driving animals to explore new territories. "Due to shifts in weather patterns and habitat changes, animals are beginning to venture into new territories. It's possible the bird moved to higher altitudes in search of food or water," Karayat explained TOI.

What does this mean for wildlife?
While the presence of the peacock in Bageshwar’s mountainous terrain has raised questions, it also highlights potential changes in wildlife behavior due to environmental factors. The ongoing investigation will aim to determine whether this occurrence is linked to broader climate trends or remains an isolated case.
