MS Dhoni has been central to Chennai Super Kings ever since the start of Indian Premier League back in 2008, when he was the most expensive player in the inaugural auction and made the captain. He has won five IPL titles, the joint most for any captain and has tasted the most success over the last 17 years with the franchise.
However, now 44 years, speculations about the legendary wicket-keeper's future loom large. After CSK's worst ever season where the team finished last in IPL 2025, the question is whether Dhoni will return for one more season.
Dhoni, who is battling persistent knee issues, made a public appearance recently where he was questioned about his plans for IPL 2026.
“I don't know whether I'll play or not. I have time to decide. I have some time until December, so I'll take another couple of months, and then finally, I can make my decision,” Dhoni told the host.
From the crowd, a fan urged, “You have to play, sir.” Dhoni, known for his sharp, witty replies, instantly drew laughter with his response: “Arre, ghutne me jo dard hota hai uska take care kaun karega? (The pain I have in my knees, who will take care of that?)”
Dhoni has had issues with his knees for a couple of seasons. After leading CSK to a historic fifth title in IPL 2023, he underwent surgery in Mumbai. The veteran had played that season through discomfort and had delayed operation until the season ended to allow a proper rehabilitation period before IPL 2024.
In 2025, Dhoni took over the captaincy duties once again following an injury to CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. He led their faltering and imbalanced side and managed to notch up a few wins at the end of the season.
Battling the bad knee, Dhoni batted as low as No 8 in a few matches despite the team being in early trouble. The superstar, however, continues to draw full-houses during two months of IPL wherever he plays across the country.
Each of CSK's five title wins in the IPL have come under Dhoni and the franchise continues to expect their 'Thala' to return once again for the 2026 edition.
Dhoni, however, made no such promise, while had had made promises in the past over the same questions.
