A tragic incident occurred in Bengaluru when a 35-year-old autorickshaw driver, Khasim, lost his life after a girder fell off a trailer around midnight on Tuesday. The incident took place on the service road at Kogilu Cross, along the Bengaluru-Ballari Road, which also leads to Kempegowda International Airport.
As per a TOI report, eyewitnesses revealed that the girder fell off the trailer due to the negligence of the driver, who fled the scene after abandoning the vehicle. The police suspect that the girder was not properly secured to the trailer. The trailer, carrying the girder to a metro construction site, was making a U-turn when the incident occurred.
The accident took place at around 12.10 am when Khasim was driving his autorickshaw on the road. The trailer, bearing the registration number KA-01-AM-1910, was taking a U-turn, and Khasim’s autorickshaw was approaching the area. Eyewitnesses explained that as the trailer turned, the girder, which was not fastened securely, fell off and landed on the autorickshaw. Tragically, Khasim was still inside the vehicle, and he was crushed by the falling girder.
The passenger in the autorickshaw had just stepped out to pay the fare online and was unharmed. Mohammed Adil, an eyewitness, said that the passenger had tried to warn Khasim about the falling girder but unfortunately, Khasim could not escape in time.
Yelahanka traffic police arrived at the scene at 2 am to retrieve the body of the victim from the autorickshaw. The investigation revealed that the chain used to tie the girder to the trailer had snapped, causing the accident. The police have begun an investigation into the incident, and they are attempting to locate the driver of the trailer.
The police also said that local residents, who were at the scene, were upset with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) for not ensuring safety during the transportation of the girder. Witnesses mentioned that metro officials did not arrive at the scene for over two hours after the accident, which led to growing anger among locals.
The Chief PRO of BMRCL, B. L. Yeshwanth Chavan, confirmed that the incident occurred while the trailer was transporting a girder near a metro construction site. This is part of the ongoing work for the Blue Line project, which will connect Central Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport with an elevated corridor.
As the investigation continues, the Yelahanka traffic police are working to determine the exact cause of the incident. Meanwhile, a crane was used to remove the fallen girder, and authorities are examining the safety protocols followed during the transportation process.
