In a press conference on Thursday, the police named the attackers as Adil Hussain Thoker, a resident of Anantnag, Hashim Musa alias Suleiman, and Ali Bhai alias Talha Bhai. Additionally, authorities announced a reward of ₹20 lakh for information leading to the capture of these absconding terrorists. The attack, which took place in the picturesque region of Pahalgam, killed 26 people, most of whom were tourists. This marks the deadliest assault in Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama attack.
Terror Attack in Pahalgam
On Tuesday, a group of terrorists opened fire on tourists in the Baisaran area, located five kilometers from Pahalgam, within the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. The attack was a well-coordinated assault targeting civilians, which resulted in significant casualties. A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team, led by a Deputy Inspector General, was dispatched the following day to assist in the ongoing investigation. The team has since identified five terrorists involved in the attack, including three Pakistani nationals and two locals from Jammu and Kashmir. The NIA’s presence is crucial as they collaborate with the Jammu and Kashmir Police to piece together the details of the attack.
Government Response and High-Level Meeting
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking in Bihar, assured that India would track down and punish every individual responsible for the attack. He emphasized that no terrorist or their supporters would go unpunished. This statement comes amid the intense investigation efforts, as the country waits for justice for the victims of the Pahalgam attack. Meanwhile, a high-level meeting was held at the Ministry of Home Affairs, attended by key officials including Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, and the head of the Research and Analysis Wing, Ravi Sinha. The meeting aimed to discuss the latest developments related to the attack and to strategize on further steps.
