WhatsApp Web: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) of the Government of India has issued a public notice warning people not to use WhatsApp Web on their office laptops or computers. The ministry said that even though it may seem convenient to access personal chats and files during work, doing so may expose your personal information to your employer or IT team.
Danger of access to private chats
According to government advice, office network and system administrators can access your personal messages and files through WhatsApp Web. This is possible in many ways, such as through screen-monitoring software, malware, or browser hijacking.
Growing concern over cybersecurity
This warning has come at a time when threats to cyber security are increasing in workplaces. According to the government's Information Security Awareness (ISEA) team, many companies are now considering WhatsApp Web as a potential security risk. It can become a gateway for malware or phishing attacks, which can put the entire corporate network at risk.
Danger from office Wi-Fi too
The advisory also states that not only office devices but also using office Wi-Fi can give companies partial access to the data of employees' personal phones. Apart from this, if the office laptop gets hacked, personal data can fall prey to data breach, especially on unsecured Wi-Fi networks.
If using WhatsApp Web is necessary
If for some reason you have to use WhatsApp Web on an office laptop, then the government has suggested some security measures.
Always log out before leaving your desk.
Avoid clicking on links or attachments from unknown contacts.
Understand your company's IT and data policy thoroughly and act accordingly.
