Thomas Tuchel has already set clear condition for taking England job with deal close

Thomas Tuchel must believe he can win the World Cup or the European Championship as manager of – otherwise he wouldn't be interested in the job.

The former and manager is in to . Tuchel has won the , the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, but he has never managed at international level.

Shortly after his , the German outlined the one condition he would need to consider taking over an international side. He said he would only manage a nation he believes has a chance of competing for major trophies.

Now he is on the verge of becoming the latest manager to try and end 58 years of English hurt, it can be assumed that he feels he can claim some silverware with the current squad.

In a previous interview with , Tuchel was asked if he would ever consider managing internationally. He said: "Yeah, why not? I would, I would.

“I did not give too much thought to it until now. But I would consider if it is the right team and if it has the potential to win trophies like the World Cup and the Euros."

He was then asked if he would ever want to manage England, even though Southgate was preparing for the 2022 World Cup in at the time. He added: "I see where you are going. But I think England has a good coach right now.

"The team is very strong and very talented… as for everything else, I will not comment."

Should an agreement be struck between Tuchel and The FA, the 51-year-old will become the first ever German to manage an England national football team. He will also become the third foreign manager to take charge of the Three Lions after Swede Sven Goran-Eriksson and Italian Fabio Capello.

Tuchel has been out of work since he departed Bayern Munich at the end of last season. He has repeatedly been linked with , as current Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag continues to struggle at the club.

It's understood, though, that talks have recently accelerated quickly between The FA and Tuchel, which will see firm negotiations take place. are also believed to have spoken to various candidates and even sounded out boss , whose contract with the Citizens ends next season.

Current interim boss Lee Carsley also stated The FA are looking for a " class manager" who can give an England side that has reached two consecutive European Championship finals an extra push. As well as winning major trophies, Tuchel has also worked with England captain , who contributed 44 goals and 12 assists in 45 appearances, during their one and only season together at Bayern.

Carsley is expected to be in the dugout for the final round of Nations League games next month, but a new boss is expected to be in situ when the World Cup qualification draw is made on December 13. The tournament, come 2026, is being held in the US, Canada and Mexico, and the enlarged World Cup will feature 48 teams – instead of the traditional 32 – while also adding another knockout round into the mix in the form of the round of 32. Meanwhile, Euro 2028 is being co-hosted by England, the Republic of Ireland, and Wales.
