Spain's star midfielder Aitana Bonmati is on the mend after being hospitalised for viral meningitis, now gearing up to rejoin her teammates ahead of Euro 2025.
The 27 year old Barcelona stalwart will link up with her national squad soon, just in time for their tournament opener next week. Spain, who are reigning world champions, kick off their challenge on Thursday with a Group B clash against Portugal in Bern.
Bonmati, a two-time Ballon d'Or recipient, had to miss out on Spain's recent 3-1 friendly triumph over Japan last Friday. From her hospital bed, she tuned in to watch her colleagues in action, sharing an Instagram photo of herself following the game from Leganes.

The Spanish football federation announced, "After several days in hospital with viral meningitis, Aitana Bonmati has been discharged from hospital and will join the Spanish national team's training camp in the coming days."
A linchpin in the Spanish side that lifted the 2023 World Cup trophy and claimed the 2024 Nations League title, Bonmati's presence on the pitch is integral. Montse Tome, Spain’s head coach, expressed after the Japan fixture that Bonmati is indispensable to the team's plans: "She's an extremely important player for us and we will wait for her, no matter what, as long as we have to.
