In a classic episode of her Channel 5 series, Jane McDonald took viewers on an intimate journey through her cherished Yorkshire haunts. Jane treasures Yorkshire as her timeless home and the show provided a rare glimpse into the singer's formative years, filled with personal tales of family and childhood.
One striking admission came during a visit to Leeds City Centre when Jane opened up about her intense love for shopping, a passion that once spiraled out of control.
Reflecting on nostalgic times, Jane recounted: "Now, this is how I remember shopping with my mum on a Saturday afternoon."
"The bright lights and exciting array of shops of the big city made Leeds a special day out for us and worth the journey," she reminisced, reports the Express. "We'd ride on the top deck of the bus, the 110 actually, and plan our day ahead."
Jane admitted: "Leeds was the place where I got the shopping bug."
However, it evolved into more than just a hobby: "So, it's an illness now, shopping for me because I can't pass a shop. I really love shopping and Leeds has always been synonymous for having the best shops."
During the days when she illuminated clubs with her singing, Jane would dart to Leeds to snag her dazzling stage-wear.
Even with her self-professed shopping fixation, Jane maintained that she's a savvy shopper, always hunting down a bargain and never splurging on full-priced items.
Tracing the roots of her retail enthusiasm, Jane revealed that as a teenager, her pocket money was often swiftly exchanged for trendy garments.
Wandering through Leeds' bustling high street, Jane reminisced: "This was the hub, traffic used to be going up and down here like mad. It was a vibrant city centre and it still is."
Reflecting on her days with her mother, the cruise ship crooner shared: "Back in the day, me and mum always knew where the bargains were.
"Kirkgate Market, retail therapy started here in 1857, designed by Crystal Palace's architect, Joseph Paxton. Such great memories of this market. I used to come here as a child with my mum."
The excitement of a trip to Leeds market wasn't lost on her, as Jane explained: "It was a big occasion to come to Leeds market. There used to be buses turning up from all around the area, it was heaving when I used to come here.
"And the vibe, Leeds Market has a real vibe about it. There was everything here, fabrics, sweets, curtains, it was a fab place."
Reflecting on the unique charm of Kirkgate Market compared to what she had at home, she labelled it as nothing short of magical, "An Aladdin's cave. Mum would sometimes buy me the latest boots or sometimes a dress as a little treat."
