Angry Brits blast rising energy bills as they compare how much they pay

Send Push

Brits have hit out at sky high and you can find out here how much you pay compared to your neighbours.

Many people were struggling to pay their at the height of the energy crisis and worryingly remain high especially compared to other countries.

It comes as data has shown that for companies the average cost of a megawatt of energy per hour was more than £309 in 2023 - nearly twice as much as Germany which came in second on the list.

The figure represents a 124% growth in the last five years which has seen Britain overtake many European rivals in the process to become the most expensive. The UK and Germany were followed by Italy, France and Japan to complete the top 5 in the list, according to the table compiled by the Financial Times.

And households with one Reddit user trying to find out how their bills compare to others. They wrote: “What are your current gas/electric bills per month? I live in a mid terrace Victorian house. Octopus energy are my provider and I currently pay about £180/month…..my electric is about £15/week and gas is about £30/week. I can’t believe how expensive it got over lockdown….and the inflated prices haven’t gone back down!”

Energy prices continue to rise with an increase of 10% seen meaning that the typical annual dual-fuel bill paid by direct debit is £1,717. This is an increase of £149 and an extra £12 on monthly bills. Many people responded to the Reddit post to share how much they pay.

“I’m also with octopus energy. Live in a 2 bedroom tenement Victorian flat and we’re around £150 per month. I’m sure it used to be half that when we first moved in 6 years ago,” said one person. Another added: “Almost the same as you - Victorian 2 bed middle floor flat. Also with Octopus who took us on when our previous supplier went bust. Maybe 3 years ago? We’ve paid £136 pm dual fuel every month since then and nothing ever changes. We paid £70/80pm with our previous supplier … which is maybe why they went bust.”

Figures of around £100 to £150 a month were quite common replies which does also fit in with the average annual bill paid by direct debit. Another person commented similarly: “We’re in a 40's semi detached, new windows and front door. 2 beds. We pay around £120 a month for dual and that's without the heating on. Going to be financially ruined by spring.”

A further comment read: “1890s stone built back to back. Duel fuel is £103 a month. I only moved in in Sep so have no idea yet if that is an appropriate amount but that is what Octopus set my payments at. I have 2 power hungry teenagers but they're only here half the week. Also have a log burner and an aversion to heating the entire house when it's just me here…”

The new energy price cap of £1,717 came into force from October 1 and will last until December 31. It's important to remember that the price cap doesn’t actually set a limit on how much you will pay for energy - instead, it caps the unit rates for gas and electricity. This means your total energy bill is still very much dependent on how much you're using. If you use more, then you will pay more.
